History Fair Work-Outs & Paloozas

Mark your calendars for these special student development opportunities.
Mini-Workshops by librarians and CMHF staff, individualized coaching to support your History Fair program. Teachers who want to make attendance mandatory or want to bring entire classes to a specific event are asked to contact the History Fair office at 312-799-2153 or historyfair@chicagohistory.org

Friday, February 3

No School Day for Students


School's Out, History Fair is In!

Palooza at the NEIU - Ronald WIlliams Library

Join librarian-led workshops in which they first demo, then help students with their own topics on doing research for:

  • Primary Sources 10:30am, 1:00pm
  • Secondary Sources 11:15am, 1:45pm
  • Advanced Google Searches 12noon, 2:30pm

Expect to use some online databases that are new!

Individual coaching all day - We suggest students bring their historical questions/draft thesis statements, and outlines or draft argument sheets.

Do Research using NEIU's books and journals (on your own or with coach assistance as needed)

Visit the NEIU/State of Illinois Archives Special Collections to see the types of sources available.

Attend a History Fair staff-led workshop on developing the  Theme-Based Thesis, 12:30pm

Teacher Meet-Up at 1:30pm in the NEIU Library Café to ask questions, share tips.

Lunch options: The nearby Student Union has an area reserved for History Fair. Buy food at the many options there or bring your own.  The library's cafe has a small, light selection as well.

Make strategic use of your time and take advantage of the workshops, coaches, books, and access to online resources.

Librarian-led sessions and student lab time:

  • Online Primary Sources 10:30am, 2:30pm
  • Online Advanced Secondary Sources and how to best research in them (aka--You Don't Have to Read the Entire Book!) 11:30am, 1:30pm
  • Smart Newspaper Searches 12:30 pm only

Special Collections Research

  • Advanced requests for UIC archival material will be ready for the student research at 10 am.
  • Individual conversations with Special Collections librarians may result in a limited number of archival boxes being pulled for student research on the same day. Admission tickets from HF staff needed.

Individual coaching: Students are encouraged to come with draft thesis statements, notes and outlines, or draft Argument worksheets.

History Fair workshop on Making an Argument at 2:15-3:00pm


Students may bring flash drives for the scanner instead of paying for photocopying and laptops (responsible for their own property)

Ticket information will describe food and transportation options.

Registered students receive priority on the coach and Special Collections sign-up.
