Summer PEP for U.S. History Teachers

Enhance your summer with a series of Professional Enhancement Programs for CPS  U.S. History teachers.  Earn stipends, materials, and CPDUs as you create history education materials, deepen your content knowledge.  Most programs are completed in three sessions or less.  You may register for more than one program, but class size is limited so please be sure you will attend.

The Mexican community in Chicago has a long history that addresses issues of race, citizenship, and community.  Spend an afternoon with Gabriela Arrendondo, author of Mexican Chicago, who is visiting from California, and deepen your understanding, “read” primary sources in a new way, and explore ways to teach Mexican Chicago in your classes.

WHY CHICAGO LABOR HISTORY MATTERS:  LABOR TRAIL BUS TOUR & DISCUSSION

Tour important labor history sites with the Illinois Labor History Society and  discuss the role of contested history when teaching,  based on pre-distributed readings on Haymarket, Pullman, Stockyards.

Readings and primary sources that look at innovations from Chicago that changed society, in preparation for the 2010 NHD theme.   Columbia College professor Con Buckley leads seminars.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

June 26, August 5, and on your own

You will propose your research topic and/or research institution(s), and a “final product” based on your research (lesson plans based on primary sources, paper, annotated bibliography). Fellowship supports 2 meetings and 12 research hours on your own.
